This study aimed to develop and analyse a new metric for evaluating goalkeepers’ saving ability in football. The research scope included all goalkeepers (N=31) who played more than 1,000 minutes. This study utilised advanced data, specifically xGOT (Expected Goals on Target), and measured saving ability by calculating the difference between the opposition team’s xGOT and the goalkeeper’s goals conceded. according to the newly developed metric, the goalkeeper with the best saving ability was Chang-Geun Lee of Daejeon Hana Citizen, with a score of 5.873. This result differed from previous studies, which evaluated goalkeeping performance using metrics such as goals conceded per opposition’s total shots, shots on target, and xG. Previous research did not adequately consider the context of shooting situations or shot trajectories, making it difficult to assess saving ability accurately. in contrast, this study incorporated both the opposition’s shooting situation and shot trajectory, allowing for a more valid ecaluation of a goalkeeper’s saving ability.
