With advancements in mobile and wearable technology, digital biomarkers are emerging as transformative tools in healthcare, enabling continuous, cost-effective monitoring. This study aims to define digital biomarkers, review current research, and explore future impacts. This study relied on a review of relevant literature on the development and research of digital biomarkers across several clinical fields, including dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and depression. Digital biomarkers, collected through digital devices like wearables, offer objective, quantifiable physiological and behavioral data. Research has primarily focused on neurology, particularly in dementia and Parkinson’s disease, but has also been published on a range of conditions including diabetes and mental illness.
Unlike traditional biomarkers, digital biomarkers are non-invasive, affordable, and provide realtime data, enhancing disease monitoring and treatment evaluation. They minimize subjective biases and, as endpoints in clinical trials, are expected to expand remote data collection. However, for digital biomarkers to become widely used in patient care and monitoring, several challenges must be addressed, such as data standardization, security, and integration with electronic health records. In the future, composite biomarkers integratin
