Nakrang Commandery was incorporated into the Northern Wei in 432 during Emperor Taiwu’s conquest of the Northern Yan. Subsequently, a special administrative unit called Yanguo was established, under which the Nakrang Commandery appears to have existed from the early 5th century to the early 6th century. This commandery was later renamed Leryang Commandery, abolished, and then reinstated in the Yingzhou region toward the end of the Zhengguang era (520–525).
The establishment and maintenance of Nakrang(Nangnang) Commandery, as well as the appointment of officials such as the Yanguo Nakrang Zhongzheng, suggest that the Northern Wei court formally recognized the fictive ancestral seat of Nakrang. This also functioned as a political and social acknowledgment of those claiming descent from Nakrang. The reestablishment of Leryang Commandery in Yingzhou likely reflected the court’s intention to restore influence in the Daling River region through the remaining Nakrang-lineage population.
Epitaphs of Nakrang-origin families exhibit genealogical narratives that not only emphasize their long history since the Han dynasty but also seek to link their origins to pre-Qin and Zhou dynasty traditions. However, it is difficult to assert that origin myths such as descent from Jizi or noble Zhou lineages were universally shared among these families or preserved from the time of the Nakrang Commandery in Pyongyang. Rather, these narratives appear to have been strategically crafted in response to the diverse political and social contexts faced by individual families within Northern Wei society.
