This study analyzes the modern funeral culture of Seongnam City through the case of Seongnam City’s funeral hall, from the perspective of cultural transformation. As implied by the term funeral, the foundation of funeral culture lies in ritual etiquette(禮法). If we are to describe the ritual etiquette performed in modern funeral halls as a transformation of tradition in modern times, there should be discernible traces of traditions that have undergone change. However, within the ritual etiquette practiced at Seongnam City’s funeral hall, it is difficult to find any such traces of tradition that could be considered altered.
The ritual etiquette at Seongnam City’s funeral hall cannot easily be described as a modernization of tradition based on filial piety. Though it may outwardly borrow the appearance of tradition, in reality it is closer to a fabrication and invention of tradition, a form of ‘constructed tradition,’ and the emergence of a new habitus. It is difficult to find traditional grounds for such elements as the gravestone-shaped ancestral tablets installed in the columbarium, the condolence manners of visitors, the procedures of memorial rites, mourning attire, and mourning badges observed at Seongnam City’s funeral hall.
At the root of this phenomenon lies the funeral industry, referred to as funeral capitalism. In particular, the funeral supplies provided through bidding processes frequently include items that not only lack grounding in traditional ritual etiquette, but also contradict even modern ritual etiquette. This occurs because funeral supply companies prioritize commercial profit over adherence to tradition or ritual etiquette in developing their products. Funeral service workers (including funeral directors) also lack the capacity to distinguish whether the supplied items conform to ritual etiquette. The bereaved families are similarly unable to discern this. As a result, funeral supplies unrelated to ritual etiquette have become widespread.
A rite is a cultural device that formalizes personal acts into public practice. The stipulation in the Act on Funeral Services, etc. prohibiting the disposition of a corpse within 24 hours of death also stems from traditional ritual etiquette. Since the term funeral rites includes the character ritual etiquette(禮), it originally signifies an act to be performed not merely as a treatment of a corpse but as a moral obligation. However, it is also a fact that modern funeral culture often fails to uphold this principle. Accordingly, it is insufficient to explain the disregard for ritual etiquette based on filial piety in modern funerals merely as ‘transformation in modern times,’ ‘changes in funeral culture,’ ‘constructed tradition,’ or ‘changes in habitus’ resulting from industrialization, urbanization, and modernization.
