초록· 키워드

The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of universal design implementation in childcare support facilities—specifically nursing rooms—within major mixed-use shopping malls in Seoul, and to provide spatial design recommendations for creating parenting-friendly environments. The research involved a literature review and on-site case studies of three high-traffic malls: Lotte Mart at Seoul Station, Times Square, and The Hyundai Seoul. Site visits were conducted using a checklist derived from the Universal Design Guidelines for Childcare Support Spaces(Seoul Metropolitan Government, 2022), encompassing 112 items across fundamental and spatial composition elements. The key findings are as follows: While basic access features such as level entrances were generally secured, circulation width and spatial guidance were often insufficient. Assistive furniture like diaper-changing tables was present but poorly maintained and spatially constrained. Safety measures including alarms and visual cues were inconsistently applied, and most facilities lacked consideration for diverse users such as grandparents, people with disabilities, and multicultural families. Cleanliness, lighting, and environmental sustainability also emerged as areas for improvement. This study underscores the importance of integrating universal design into everyday parenting spaces and recommends future research incorporate behavioral observation and user interviews to enhance design and policy relevance.
