This study examines how the silver-fork novel of early nineteenth-century Britain functioned as advertisements and constructed a new form of consumer identity. Published between the 1820s and 1840s, these fashionable novels gained popularity among middle-class readers by providing detailed information about aristocratic lifestyles, including fashion items with specific brand names, luxury goods, and social venues. Despite their clear commercial function, little research has connected silver-fork novels with advertising in the context of early nineteenth-century consumer culture. To address this gap, this paper analyzes works by several silver fork novelists, including Catherine Gore, Letitia Landon, and Benjamin Disraeli, to reveal how their novels operate as sophisticated advertising media that repeatedly expose readers to particular brands and consumption patterns. Moreover, this article explores how the advertising elements of these novels present a different model of subjectivity from the modern Subject depicted in the traditional realistic novel. Rather than constructing identity through psychological depth, silver-fork novels create characters through surface elements—what characters consume and how they perform their social roles. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, this paper argues that these novels present a new model of subjectivity based on consumption and performance rather than authentic inner depth. Female characters, in particular, embody this consumer identity through their elaborate display of luxury goods in spaces like opera boxes, where they become both advertisers and advertisements themselves. Ultimately, this study reinterprets silver-fork novels as early examples of the interplay between fiction and marketing, anticipating modern consumer culture. The performative, surface-based model of selfhood, first articulated in these once-dismissed novels, provides a crucial mirror for understanding contemporary consumer subjectivity in our increasingly commodified society.
