This study investigates the comparative relationship between Korean oral folklore and sign language folklore, focusing on their transmission as oral literature and their role in shaping Deaf identity. While Korean oral folklore relies on spoken language and auditory performance, sign language folklore is transmitted visually through the body and space. The analysis centers on six narratives that reflect the cultural values and communicative experiences of the Korean Deaf community. These stories are not confined to the Korean context; they have been translated and reinterpreted in transnational Deaf networks, showing how local folklore can circulate globally as part of shared Deaf cultural heritage. The methodology includes textual translation of each story, structural analysis of narrative patterns, and cultural critique of themes such as origin myths, Deaf ways of seeing, simultaneity of expression, communal solidarity, communication rights, and the role of interpreters. Structural features such as repetition, triadic patterns, iconicity, and simultaneity highlight the unique linguistic resources of sign languages, while cultural analysis demonstrates how folklore embodies collective memory, resistance to oppression, and affirmation of Deaf identity. The findings reveal that both oral and signed folklore share the variability, communal performance, and adaptability characteristic of oral literature, yet differ in modality and cultural grounding. Sign language folklore functions as both literary text and educational resource, enabling Deaf learners to affirm their identity and hearing learners to develop intercultural understanding. Ultimately, this study argues that sign language folklore should be recognized as a legitimate literary genre and cultural resource. Its transnational circulation underscores the need to approach it not only as Korean folklore but also as part of the broader, global repertoire of Deaf folklore.
