Purpose: This study aims to analyze the effects of a low-intensity resistance circuit training program on functional performance indicators in older adults with spinal cord injuries (SCI).
Method: Participants included individuals aged 60 years or older with a diagnosis of SCI who consented to participate after being informed of the study’s purpose and requirements. The intervention consisted of a low-intensity resistance circuit training program conducted over 12 weeks, with sessions held three times per week. Outcome variables included exercise volume, metabolic equivalent of task (MET), and blood lactate levels. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 28.0, with means and standard deviations calculated. Differences over time and between groups were assessed using repeated measures ANOVA and paired t-tests. Statistical significance was set at α=0.05.
Results: The exercise group showed a significant increase in exercise volume ( p<.001). MET values decreased significantly during similar tasks in the exercise group, indicating improved efficiency ( p<.01). Blood lactate levels exhibited a decreasing trend in the exercise group, though this did not reach statistical significance ( p>.05).
Conclusion: A 12-week low-intensity resistance circuit training program is an effective and safe intervention for improving functional performance indicators in older adults with SCI. This program may also promote increased future exercise participation among this population. These findings provide foundational evidence emphasizing the importance of exercise for older adults with SCI, who often face limitations in physical activity due to their physical constraints.
