초록· 키워드

In general, the large temples in ancient East Asian cities consisted of various areas whith multiful functions arrangedaround central area that typically included pagodas and Buddha halls, and the total size of the temple was sometimesequivalent to dozens of blocks of the capital of Unified Silla. Given the scale and layout of the buildings excavated at Mitansatemple site recently, it is very difficult to accept the view that this site was originally built as a place of worship within thegrounds of a nobleman's residence and later changed into a temple. Based on the design of large temples within the capitalsof ancient East Asia, the block in which Mitansa Temple stands may have been part of Hwangnyongsa Temple during theUnified Silla period. A three-story stone pagoda was built there in the late 8th century, after which the site developed intoMitansa Temple during the Goryeo dynasty.
