Smart port development has become a key factor in improving port performance and competitiveness as global maritime trade expands. China is promoting its ports’ digitalization and green development, but there is still a lack of research on measuring smart competitiveness. To fill this gap, this study used principal component analysis (PCA) to evaluate the smart competitiveness of the top ten container ports along China's East China Sea coast in 2024. The study considered five core dimensions: smart infrastructure, smart operation, green environmental capability, technological innovation, and economic performance. Three principal components were extracted to represent these areas. The results showed that Shanghai Port and Ningbo-Zhoushan Port were in the leading position in comprehensive competitiveness, while Guangzhou Port performed well in cost control and sustainable development. Some medium-sized ports, such as Beibu Gulf, performed well in specific areas. The study further confirmed that competitiveness is affected not only by the port size but also by multiple factors. The study provides valuable insights for Chinese ports’ future investment in automation, digital logistics and environmental protection strategies.
