This study examines the evolution of the English discourse marker that said, tracing its progression from a syntactically integrated clausal phrase to a fixed, autonomous metatextual operator in discourse. Drawing on data from the British National Corpus, the analysis applies the theoretical frameworks of cooptation and Discourse Grammar to explain this shift. The research highlights key linguistic mechanisms involved, including semantic bleaching, decategorialization, pragmatic specialization, and formal fixation. that said emerges as a highly efficient marker of concessive-contrastive relations, guiding listeners through real-time argumentative shifts. Corpus evidence, particularly collocational patterns emphasizing procedural cues, supports its role as a non-propositional, discourse-organizing device. This study contributes to advancing grammaticalization theory by integrating cooptation and pragmatic analysis, offering a comprehensive account of that said’s functional specialization and metatextual status in contemporary English.
