초록· 키워드

Urban voids in contemporary cities have been increasing due to shifts in industrial structures and the reorganization of urban functions. Among these, former airport sites have re-emerged as strategic assets for urban and architectural regeneration, owing to their vast scale and advantageous locations. This study investigates how Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin has been transformed into a vital public space through a citizen-led urban regeneration process grounded in public engagement and the restoration of communal values. It examines the full trajectory of this transformation including the closure of airport, subsequent political conflicts, civic mobilization, institutional reforms, and programmatic developments. The 2014 citizen referendum, which resulted in the official cancellation of government-led development plans, marked a critical turning point in preserving the site as an urban commons based on autonomy and ecological preservation, thereby offering a practical model of sustainability. Moreover, its adaptive uses as a refugee shelter, COVID-19 vaccination center, and venue for international events demonstrate the multifunctionality and spatial flexibility of large-scale urban spaces, highlighting their potential as resilient infrastructure in times of crisis. By focusing on the interconnected values of publicness, civic participation, and sustainability, this study illuminates a pioneering case of contemporary urban regeneration and offers valuable architectural insights for reimagining underutilized urban land in large metropolitan contexts.
