    We propose a robust estimator for the covariance function of functional and longitudinal data observed sparsely and irregularly in the presence of outliers. The method generalizes the reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) smoothing framework of [1] by replacing the quadratic loss with an M-type loss function, thereby mitigating the influence of contaminated observations. The estimator is computed via an efficient iteratively reweighted least squares algorithm, and the representer theorem ensures a finite-dimensional representation. A data driven selection of the smoothing parameter is carried out using generalized cross validation. Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed robust estimator performs comparably to classical methods when no contamination is present, while maintaining stability and significantly lower error in the presence of outliers. An application to the Primary Biliary Cirrhosis dataset illustrates the practical utility of the method for real world sparse and irregular longitudinal data with outliers.
