Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) and speech recognition present new opportunities to enhance language learning. These technologies offer benefits such as personalized learning and access to an on-demand virtual tutor. Given the growing use of conversational AI in language learning, this study investigates how non- Korean learners experience a Korean voice-based AI tutor, focusing on the specific challenges, expectations, and interaction patterns that emerge when practicing spoken Korean with an AI system. We conducted an in-lab study with nine participants and followed by a semi-structured interview. The study involved the development of a custom conversational probe using OpenAI GPTs, tailored for Korean language practice, designed to interact with users as a language tutor. While participants encountered several pain points in both technical and linguistic aspects that affected their interaction, they generally reported a positive experience and expressed a willingness to continue learning with the AI tutor. This research contributes by extending AI language learning beyond English and by revealing learners’ real-world experiences with a Korean voice- based AI tutor, leading to design implications for creating more supportive and effective AI tutoring systems. Future studies should evaluate long-term usage experience and investigate the correlation between system use patterns and proficiency improvements.
