In its architectural design curriculum, the UNO Group of the Paris-Belleville School of Architecture ischaracterized by utilizing three-dimensional models on a small scale, called figure, with achromatic andprimary colors from the 1980s. The three-dimensional form of expression of figure is fundamentallydifferent from ordinary program?diagram models with a similar form in that the latter tend to express thethree-dimensional composition of functions with free form in relation to the concept of projects, while theformer complies with composition law of figure based on the UNO Group’s unique theory on space inmodern architecture and expresses conceptual implications abstractly.
Figure has its existential value as part of the key methodologies that realize ultimate goals of the UNOGroup’s education, which assumes perception about architectural space as the most prioritized topic ofarchitectural education. Figure is obtained through education over a certain period in architecture studiosbased on the UNO group’s simple text explaining the basic principles of figure, and therefore it is difficultto identify a clear educational content for figure in practical terms. Such ambiguity in the formal aspectsis likely to trigger confusion among students who receive education on the spot, and literaturecomplementing a more systematic explanation is considered necessary. This study examined compositionalmethods and fundamentals of figure and is meaningful as providing basic data to develop educationalmanuals related to figure in UNO studios.
