Cross-laminated timber (CLT) exhibits inherent limitations in airborne sound insulation performance due to its relatively low density combined with high stiffness and orthotropic structural characteristics. Therefore, This study aims to quantitatively analyze the effects of key design parameters on the airborne sound insulation performance of CLT exterior walls and to examine their sound insulation characteristics under different wall configurations. To this end, the commercial acoustic prediction software INSUL was employed to estimate the one-third octave band sound reduction indices of CLT exterior wall systems. Based on a reference CLT wall configuration, variations in surface density, cavity arrangement, and the application of decoupling elements resulted in distinct frequency response characteristics. The weighted sound reduction index (Rw) increased to a maximum of 66 dB with increased surface density and multilayer wall configurations, and further improved to 73 dB when resilient channels were applied. These results confirm that, through the application of appropriate composite wall design strategies, CLT exterior walls can achieve efficient airborne sound insulation performance relative to their mass.
