The Function of Social Control in China：Leaders' Thoughts and their EffectsThis essay has evolved from the premise that the influence of the leadership is absolute in the course of China's policy decision making. Therefore, the philosophy of the leadership is considered the main factor of policy making and closely related to controlling the social sphere.According to the essay, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Idea and Jiang Zemin Opinion are regarded as the philosophy of the leadership. And the social sphere is represented by Cultural revolution, Tian'anmen Incident and Falungong Incident which were the main social movements of those days. It is considered that the Mass line and Proletariat dictatorship from Mao's Thought, the 4 basic principles from Deng's Idea and the relation of reform, development and stability from Jiang's Opinion functioned as the mechanism controlling the main movements.In short, this essay reveals first how the philosophy of the leadership has functioned as the control mechanism over the social sphere. Secondly it shows how the mechanism has controlled the social movements. Finally it explains that how the power of social control has changed as the philosophy of the leadership has changed.
