The history of literary theory has been a presentation of the dichotomy of "literature versus theory," and that history, I believe, should be discontinued. A text should be able to resist any type of generic classifications and allow active and spontaneous interactions between seemingly different intellectual fields. This means that a text, irrespective of its traditional label as a theoretical book or a literary text, is subject to various intellectual interpretations that produce their own generic distinctions. Paranarrative is a text that resists any type of generic classifications and allows active and spontaneous interactions between seemingly different intellectual fields. We should now start seeing the connections in such a way that a novel (Mason & Dixon, for example) suddenly becomes a literary history (of the Enlightenment) or a theoretical book (about magic realism).
