This tudy examines the cultural characteristics embodiedin the procesofthe subtitlingof Shakespeare films inKorea withregard to gender. The resultshows that he conservative and gendered language xpresions of Koreansubtitles are striving not only to corect he subversive relationship betwenmen and women but also to contain homosexual impulses in the traditionalsystemofheterosexual patriarchy. The primaryreasonfor this canbexplainedby the Korean diferentiation of masculine and feminine language, but on theother hand, it is also because the physical, auditory imagesthat initiate gendersubversion in the film texts is colapsed under the presureof conservativelyvisualized reading text of the Korean subtitles. In the multi-generic ontext ofliterature-film-translation transformation, the genderidentity of the charactersshaped by the Korean subtitles in Shakespeare movies is continuouslydismantled and changes acording to a given linguistic, cultural, visual, andauditoryenvironment. In this derivative structure where the literary text and the visual text are reiterated, and the visual text is again reiterated and dismantled by the subtitle text, Shakespeare films with Korean subtitles produce yetanother cultural hypertext in the Korean Shakespeare classroom.
