A Study on Shi Yi of Jiang Zhai Shi Hua Yoo, Sung-joon Wang Fu Zhi(王夫之 1619-1692 zi Er Nong而農, hao Jiang Zhai薑齋, Chuan Shan船山) is primarily known for his studies in philosophy and the classics. Aside from his classical and philosophical studies, Wang was also a literary critic. There were two ways in which a critic in traditional China could publish his literary opinions- literary tracts or anthologies. His three judicious anthologies- Gu-shi ping-xuan 古詩評選, Tang-shi ping-xuan 唐詩評選, Ming-shi ping-xuan 明詩評選- deserve a closer scrutiny than they have received. But the central work in Wang's critical thinking is the Jiang Zhai Shi Hua. This Shi Hua has many of the characteristics, and weaknesses, of the conventional Shi Hua. Important ideas and insights are juxtaposed with trivial assertions of personal preference. Some points are repeated in the same form in several places, and others are fragmented. The central idea of Wang's poetics is that poetryis a totally independent human activity which serves the needs of man's moral and spiritual growth and enables him to be more fully integrated with the universe. Poetry is not to be confused with scholarship, not even the scholarship surrounding the Confucian Classics. Wang's criticism is not confined to the poet's point of view. He also comments on the reading of poetry. In this connection, he quotes from the seventeenth book of the Lun Yu where Confucius says "An apt quotation from the Odes may serve to stimulate the imagination, to show one's breeding, to smooth over difficulties in a group and to give expression to complaints". Commentators tend to be interested in the operative verbs in this passage(xing興, guan觀, qun群 and yuan怨). The theory of writer is not unique, but is rational.
