초록· 키워드

This study aims to examine the circulation of symbolic words assuming that internal changes in symbolic words’ vowel alternation are considered as a kind of derivation. For derivation by substantial(explicit) affixes, it is not difficult to set a base and a derivativeword. On the other hand, for internal derivation by vowel(with equivalent phonemic capability) alternation, it is not easy to set a base and a derivational word according to phonological or morphological standards. This report dealswith circulationof symbolic words by reviewing frequency of uses of symbolic words, generation of new words and their meanings based on a circulation theory broadly applied to modern linguistics. First of all, statistically, symbolic words contrasted by vowel alternation have higher frequency of uses of dark vowels. However, it shall be noted not all symbolic words of dark vowels are not unmarked. Although the higher frequency of uses is, the more identical linguistic intuition for unmarked clauses is, higher frequency of uses shall not be considered unmarked. Meanwhile, when symbolic words are used as a base for compound or derivative words, unmarked symbolic words are more active to create new words. Finally, marked/unmarked characteristics of symbolic words are decided depending on word feelings contrasted by vowel alternation. Instead, the marked/unmarked characteristics of symbolic word meanings shall be judged based on the basic meanings. Generally, extended meanings are more commonly used, so higher frequency of uses does not always mean the unmarked characteristic. In Korean dictionaries, word feelings of symbolic words are interpreted on a contrast basis, but one part shall be explained unmarkedly while the other part markedly.
