The Migrant Women's Employments in Urban Area and the Change of Their Gender Consciousness in China Lee, Kyung-ah The economic role change of migrant women and their experience of urban life for many years brought about the change of their family values and gender consciousness to a certain extent in spite of the socio- cultural condition, uniqueness of rural-urban migration and experience of marginalized urban life. The visible and independent income of migrant women strengthened their economic autonomy, at the same time, their contribution for family economy was more raised than one in rural area.Although they lived in urban area as a marginal person respectively and their opportunities that deeply learned urban culture were restricted because of the residence style and social network peculiar to them, their values about family and gender have undergone some major changes, because they were emancipated from the conventional patriarchical culture in rural area, simultaneously, were affected by relatively egalitarian gender culture.
