O Sangwon's war novels are written during 7~8 years since mid 1950's. The characteristics of the writer who majored in French and wrote dramas were focused on inquiry into human beings including existential consciousness. In pre-Korean War novels, he let us contemplate death fundamentally through inner conflicts of the characters who make their living as professional shooters and in post-Korean War novels, he raised a question through conflicts among young men unable to overcome realistic issues of economic poverty and fall into nihilism. The characters' humanitarianism in contrast to career soldiers' madness steps forward to the fundamental opinion on human beings. He pictured post-war life through war orphans, brothel area around the U.S. troops and people who lost all their household goods and living stronghold in the fire and considered the collapsed families and society caused by war could be restored by humanism which gives hopes to human beings.
