Lu-Xiang, a contemporary of Wang-Wei and Cui-Hao, was a native of Wen-shui. After passing the jin-shi examination in the early days of the Kai-yuan, he held various provincial and capital posts. As only a limited number of Lu-Xiang's poems have been handed down to the present, and, worse still, some of his poems have been assumed to be other's works, we cannot but have some difficulty when it comes to appreciation of his true characters and discussion of his value. For this reason, it has been said that Lu-Xiang, as one of the High Tang poets, was nothing but a figure who took part in forming the High Tang poetry, and that he was considered to be a follower of Wang-Wei and Meng Hao-ran. We can find out such a reason, thinking that topics of frontier, boudoir ladies, things, and ancient sites, which were typically brought out in the High Tang poets, were not seen in Lu-Xiang's poems. In addition, there were, if any, only a few in his poems. Through the themes described only in a few of his poems, such as finding out a political way, revealing a political corruption, and describing landscape and rural life, we see the major trends of the High Tang poetry, inheriting the Han-Wei feng gu, and seeking a propound art state and natural beauty. Lu-Xiang, while being content with the trend of the High Tang poetry, has been thought to make a considerable contribution to Chinese poetry, which splendidly came into full bloom in the High Tang poetry.
