“Taiwan independence”, a trend and movement of thought, was formed and developed after World War II in Taiwan and abroad. This trend of thought and movement embraced rapid growth and developed into power in the 1990s.Taiwan has been the full of ups and downs in its history. As the edge of history, it serves as the bridgehead for powerful countries to trade with the mainland, the colony, and the shelter after the failure of political struggle, all of which have always been alienated by history. All these factors eventually give rise to the “Issue of Taiwan”. That is, since the failure of the Chinese civil war, the Kuomintang retreats to Taiwan, thus forming a division between Taiwan and the mainland, then resulting in the problem of Taiwan independence due to the growth of the pro-independenceforces.There is a sharp confrontation between the Mainland and Taiwan pro-independence forces on many aspects from the recognition of history and sovereignty to international political issues. Strong opposition also exists on the formation of Taiwan pro-independence forces and its main theories.Though there are a number of theories about Taiwan independence, yet the most representative ones are “Theory of the Taiwanese nationality”, “Theory of the uncertainty of Taiwan’s status,” “Theory of the national self-determination,” “Theory of China’s sovereignty-outdated”.This article studies the issues between the Communist Party and Taiwan pro-independence forces rather than those between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang. Specifically, the writer discusses the background to the formation of Taiwan pro-independence forces and their processes, as well as main theories on Taiwan independence, and carries out researches on the attitude of the mainland towards the issue of Taiwan independence.
