Nora of A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen was understood as part of modern planning called liberation of individuality through self-awakening in both Chosun and China. But unlike the orginal play, she became the representation of free love and the synonym for new women who dream about free love. Jeong-in of New Year's Eve and Zi-jun(子君) of Shangshi(Grieving over Death, 傷逝) both are new women who received new education, dream of free love, and hope to build an ideal family. But their hopes and dreams collapsed in reality, so they left homes and chose death. This is the common element with the death of Nora after leaving home in A Doll's House. However, their deaths are not in vain but contain the aspirations which hopes to try to search for a new way of life through death.Nora, Jeong-in and Zi-jun(子君) all felt grief over revelation of reality through self-awakening, disillusion, and loneliness. Also they demonstrated courage and decisiveness to have will for freedom and pursue a new life. Differences between their choices of leaving home and committing suicide derive from different political, economic, and social reality. But the problem is Ibsen, Yeom Sang-seop and Lu Xun, their worlds would hardly be able to escape from the massive power of capital. It was that both Yeom Sang-seop and Lu Xun emphasized the issue of economic independence in New Year's Eve and Shangshi respectively.The narrator of New Year's Eve is the wife who chose death, but in Shangshi is tthe husband who gets the news of his wife's suicide. Jeong-in of New Year's Eve wrote her will, and Jeun-shung(涓生) of Shangshi wrote her essay in order to reflect on their pasts and confess their grief and remorse about them. In New Year's Eve Jeong-in's suicide, the emotions of a person about to die are described in details. Thus, the story highlights uncompromising courage and resistance. Meanwhile, Shangshi is written by Jeun-shung(涓生) who hears of his wife's death and reflected on their past and accordingly present so the emotions of the dead is the background. Thus the story highlights the self-reflection and remorse of a young intellectual man trying to make Nora of China. New Year's Eve and Shangshi are the important landmarks in the literary routes of Yeom Sang-seop and Lu Xun, respectively.
