The purpose of this paper is to propose a model of verbal irony which takes both sides, i.e., speaker and hearer into account unlike previous approaches. Through this model, we can explain the definition, types, features, and functions of irony, and even the reason why we use ironical utterances instead of literal expressions. This is basically a multiple-meaning levels; that is, irony understanding involves in precessing both literal and nonliteral meaning, so that the differences between them can be computed. Thus it supports the argument that irony is more difficult to understand than literal expressions. Finally, we will examine that this model is appropriate to explain verbal communication with some substitution, e.g., metaphor, parody, and paradox.
