Generally, international relations theorists equate China’s economic power with ‘China’s threat’ The paper starts with doubts about relevance of the ‘China threat theory’ in the context of East Asian regional context. In China’s Twelfth Five Year Plan, PRC government exhibits measures to address its socio-economic problems, including income disparity, inefficient government-led investment, and structural problems of external economic relations. According to the study, fundamental system reform and democratic political structure are indispensible for successful economic development in China. Analysis and main findings of the article reveal that China’s economic power itself is not a threat to the region. Real threat from China is uncertainties due to its leadership’s incompetence and unwillingness to reform China’s politico-economic system.
