This research aims to show the relationship between ancient Korean and Japanese court dances through analysing of the gagaku structure and finding out the origin of the gagaku clans. In case of the gagaku structure, firstly, we could find Korean court dances divide into two main categories: komagaku (Korean repertoire) and t?gaku (Chinese repertoire). The Korean court for royal banquets has the same classification. Korean court music and dance divides into hyangak ch?ngjae (Korean style dance), and tangak ch?ngjae (Chinese style dance), a classification not found in the Chinese court. In addition, we could find the concept of the right dances and the Left dances in the Japanese court could be set up after the reign of emperor Ninmy?. The terms in the t?gaku repertoire like Kogaku and Shingaku also allude that some Shingaku pieces could be transmitted though Korea. The origin of the gagaku clans also suggests the strong connection between Japanese court dances and ancient Korea. A Japanese old record Shinsen Sh?jiroku clearly shows most of gagaku clans were originated from Korea. It is important that not only komagaku clans but also t?gaku clans are associated with Korea. This indicates some t?gaku pieces were transmitted to Japan from Korea, and also alludes to the birth of gagaku being intimately associated with Korean performances.
