This is the report made in 1886 by Dr. H. N. Allen, the first missionary doctor and the first introducer of Western medicine into Korea. On his arrival in Korea, he proposed a plan for establishing a modern hospital. His proposal was accepted and the first modern hospital opened on April 10th, 1885. The hospital was named Kwang Hye Won, meaning the House of extended grace. This hospital became the forerunner of the present Severance Hospital in Seoul. After having worked there for a year with his colleague Dr. Heron, Dr. Allen wrote an annual report to submit to the missionary board in America. In this report Dr. Allen described some interesting clinical cases and provided detailed data of the patients he had treated. This os invaluable information concerning the disease pattern of the time. It is a report of great significance in the history of modern medicine in Korea.
