Research into the literature of China’s New Period is accompanied by many difficulties. This is partly because it is a rapidly changing literature of the “present,” which makes prediction difficult, but even more because of the challenge of interpreting the uniquely Chinese forms of “chaos” that transcend mere temporal constraints. While navigating through several of these forms of “chaos,” this paper seeks to elucidate the inner significance of the Cultural Revolution that gave rise to New Period “modernism,” the rebellion and despair of younger writers, and the emergence of new modes of thought that differed from established literary paradigms.
