This study aims to explore the current situation of cable informercial as well as the unique features of cable TV advertising; cable advertising has not gained stable position yet despite the fact that cable TV has become the most powerful media system in terms of the number of its subscribers and households. Findings indicate that cable TV has strong advantages in terms of its accessibility to diversified audiences. However, its weaknesses may include unreasonably fixed advertising fee, low program rating and the difficulty of implementing scientific advertising due to the insufficient level of information about its audience.
In terms of the present stage of informercial in Korea, 83.3% of cable TV stations are currently airing informercial and the number has amounted to 3.21 items a day. Key areas of informercial include living goods, clothing and healthy food and medicines, and 60% of their prices are under 100,000 won(Korean currency). Experts of cable TV advertising tend to regard that informercial may downgrade the image of broadcasting station, so this kind of perception should be improved as well.
