The purpose of this study was to explore young children's social interactions in mutual friendships in a naturalistic setting using qualitative research methods. To do this study, 34 five-year-old children had been observed for five months in a kindergarten located in a city in Kyungki province, Korea. To find out children's friendship relationships, this study carried out the sociometric nomination, parent interview, and participant observation, all of which allowed this study to gain truthworthiness. After identifying 3 children's friendship relationships, they were observed to get data on social interactions with friends and nonfriends.
The findings of this study showed that young children in a friendship relationship showed positive social interactions as well as negative social interaction with friends. Specifically, positive social interactions with friends were related to helping, support, cooperation, provision of useful information and suggestion, and emotional support. negative social interactions with friends contained competition and conflicts with friends. However, competition with friends was different in the context of the competition, which refers to playful competition. Also, young children's social interactions based on their friendship and nonfriendship relationships were different. Young children in a friendship relationship neglected nonfriends during social interactions. This results means that social interactions in a friendship relationship are limited to exclusiveness of friends and history between friends.
Further study is suggested based on the results as follows: first, children's social interaction can be explored in their social status among peers, and second, young children's social interaction can be studied based on their parents's attitude and value.
