This study used survey instruments to measure the degrees of student, parent and teacher satisfaction with school in the city of Daegu. For this purpose, an instrument was developed for each of the three groups of students, parents, and teachers. All items on the instruments were scored using a 5-point Likert scale and were closely related to the educational policies and strategic plans of Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education. The educational policies and strategic plans considered for the survey consisted of four areas of (1) nurturing students for development of self-directing and creativity in learning and problem-solving, (2) building up students having the civil ethics and sound mind and body, (3) construction of healthy school communities seeking for accountability and professionalism in education, and (4) making educational environment high-tech, learner-centered, and safe. About 1% of the whole population of interest participated in the survey and, for final analyses, responses from 4,623 (2,500 elementary, 1,175 middle, and 948 high school) students, 4,612 (2,506 elementary, 1,154 middle, and 952 high school) parents, and 2,823 (1,232 elementary, 532 middle, and 1,200 high school) teachers were used.
The main results from the survey were as follows. For the overall satisfaction with school, the students, parents, and teachers of elementary schools were most satisfied with educational service and environment, and those of middle schools were more satisfied than those of high schools. Among the three groups, teachers reported the highest satisfaction levels, and students showed higher satisfaction levels than parents. Among the four areas of the educational policies and plans, the third area of construction of healthy school communities was most highly rated by all the three groups. In addition, the following tendencies were found. The students, parents, and teachers of public schools were more satisfied with educational service and environment than those of private schools. More able students (i.e., better achievers in grade) were more satisfied with school than less able students. Female teachers were more satisfied with educational systems and environment than male teachers.
