The oldest Israelite calendar is the Gezer calendar that is a product of the tenth century B.C.. The little inscription was discovered at Gezer in 1908 by R. A. S. Macalister. In the calendar, one year is divided in 12 months according to four seasons. The calendar is related to agricultural society.
According to 1 Kings 12, Jeroboam I altered traditional Judean calendar-reckoning. The difference of one month between calendar calculations in Ephraim and Juda introduced by Jeroboam I. Jeroboam's action can fully be explained only in the light of his policy, as the founder of the Northern Kingdom, to separate from Davidic dynasty in political and religious aspects.
Another major change is Josianic change. King Josiah changed the calendar from Tishri-Tishri to Nisan-Nisan, namely changed the new year from Autumn to Spring.
The cultic calendars are appeared in several parts of the Old Testament(Exod. 23:14-17; 34:18-26; Null. 28-29; Lev. 23; Deut. 16:1-17). The most concrete cultic calendars are written in Leviticus 23 and Numbers 28-29. Y. Yadin had unraveled the recent cultic calendar of John Hyrcanus(135-104 B.C.). That is included in the Temple Scroll which was found at Qumran(11Q Temple).
