The purpose of this paper is to provide a rough sketch of our present environment and social crisis and one of our proper responses to that crisis, that is voluntary simplified way of living. Main ideas and notions in this paper, especially such as "sustainable development" and "voluntary simplicity", are borrowed from Ernst Schumacher (radical or Buddhist economist), Fritjof Capra (systems scientist), and Duane Elgin (social scientist).
Sustainable development and voluntary simplicity cannot be separated. Because Voluntary simplicity is a sustainable ways of living with balance between inner and outer living that are an active, positive response to the complex dilemmas of our time. This discussion is not intended to be predictive or definitive, rather it is speculative and intended to provoke further researches and useful analysis regarding voluntary simplicity as a meaningful ground for the fulfillment of sustainable development.
