The purpose of this study is to identify the suicide trends and causes among the Korean elderly by analyzing 83 articles that daily newspapers have reported during 1990-2004.
The findings are as follows.
1. The male elderly population had higher suicide rate than the female elderly population.
2. The elderly who were 75 years old and above had higher suicide rates than the elderly who were younger than 75 years old.
3. The elderly who lived with their adult children was far more likely to commit suicide than their counterparts who lived alone and who lived with their spouse.
4. The methods of fatal self harm were overdose 27.7%, hanging 32.5%, falling from a height 25.3%, and other methods(wounding, drowning) 14.5%.
5. The causes of suicide were psychological problems 27.7%, family problems 22.9%, health related problems 24.1 %, dementia 8.4%, and poverty 8.4%.
Implications of the findings were discussed and the recommendations for the prevention of elderly suicide were presented.
