This study examined reasons for using multiple assessors and ways of using the information from the assessors in the assessment of psychosocial treatment outcome. The theoretical background is largely based on social constructionism, which helps to understand that the assessment of mental health and social functioning of clients is constructed by the socio-cultural environment and the interaction between the client and other assessors including psychosocial treatment providers. Practical reasons for employing multiple assessors are two-folded: one is to do comprehensive assessments by viewing the client's mental health and social functioning in relation to various types of social situations in which the client functions and interacts with others; and the other is to detect potential negative effects of the psychosocial treatment on the client and her/his life. The assessments by multiple assessors can result in shared and/or a unique view of the outcome. In making use of these two parts out of multiple assessors, three major theoretical issues were discussed: (1) the limitation of the conventional approach to the outcome assessment (e.g., lack of identification of the assessor's standpoint, conclusion of the outcome based on a single criterion or assessor); (2) dilemma that can occur in using social constructionism; and (3) modification of the approach to fit into the social work practice. Based on these theoretical considerations, three quantitative methods of utilizing the information from multiple assessors are: application of multi-trait multi-method matrix using correlational analysis, factor analysis, and the tripartite model. It is emphasized that the use of multiple assessors in quantitative study of psychosocial treatment outcome is consistent with the major social work value "person-in-social- environment." Implications for social work practice and research in using multiple assessors were discussed.
