Since the interindustry model was first pioneered by Professor Wassily Leontief in the late 1930s, the Leontief inverse matrix of the traditional input-output model has been successfully used in many different areas such as in multiplier analysis, intensity analysis of resources, energy and environmental input-output analysis, etc. However, recently the author(1998) showed "the general relation" between the two different notions of direct and indirect input requirements of commodity i to support a unit of final demand of commodity j, γfij, and that to produce a unit of gross output of commodity j, γ?ij, in the open static input-output model. Therefore, we have that there exists three different types of direct and indirect requirements matrix: the Leontief inverse C, the total(direct and indirect) requirements matrix for a unit of final demand Γf, and the total(direct and indirect) requirements matrix for a unit of gross output Γ?, Now, we call the matrix Γ? the "input requirement coefficients" for gross output, which is the corresponding concept to the "output requirement coefficients" (or the Leontief inverse) for final demand.
On the basis of the findings mentioned above, this paper is mainly focused on the usefulness of "input requirement coefficients T? in the input-output model. Some useful applications, such as the Hawkins-Simon conditions, computing the energy intensity of each output, estimating the total pollution generation and decomposition by factors, and linkage and multiplier analysis, are also presented to demonstrate the usefulness and validity of a new concept "input requirement coefficients." Of course the two different types of multipliers drawn from F? and C separately do not have the same economic interpretations, because their initial, exogenous changes are different.
