The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of children-directed learning on the development of young children's creativity. The development of the creativity was based on the factors of fluency, flexibility, originality and imagination.
For this investigation, thirty two 5 year old children in a kindergarten in Daegu as an experimental group were trained in themes from interests of the children for a ten week period by children-directed learning as the Reggio Emilia approach and thirty two 5 year old children in another kindergarten in the same city as a comparison group were disciplined in curriculums from the Ministry of Education over the same period by teacher-directed learning. Both groups were given a pretest and a post test to check the development of the four factors described above. Data were statistically analyzed.
As the results, the experimental group showed better scores in the developments of fluency, flexibility and originality than the comparison group. In the development of imagination, there was no difference between the two groups. Therefore, the children-directed learning can be useful for the developments of the three factors.
