A sense of well-being differs individually even among those in a similar socio-economic situation. One of the factors contributing to the level of subjective well-being is hardiness, an important psychosocial resource that helps an individual to have commitment to her/his life, to consider hardship as a challenge rather than distress, and to have control her/his life circumstances. As many researchers concern with well-being of adolescents including college students, this study explored their levels of hardiness and subjective well-being according to the level of hardiness. The results are summed in three: 1) those whose level of hardiness is high (above the mode) experience significantly higher level of subjective well-being examined in five areas including satisfaction with life, positive emotion, psychological aspects of depression, physical aspects of depression, and total score of depression; 2) those students whose level of three domains of hardiness is high in all three domains or high in commitment and control but challenge showed higher level of subjective well-being in all five areas than those low in all three domains of hardiness; and 3) subjective well-being in four areas except for physical aspect of depression of all respondents was significantly explained by commitment among the three components of hardiness. Along with commitment, well-being of those students high in hardiness was significantly explained by control, while well-being of those low in hardiness was significantly explained by challenge. According to these results, this study suggested implications for different practical approaches to college students by the characteristics of their psychosocial resources not only for the educational purpose but also for their better preparation for the future.
