The Communication forms which is used in Twitter are Different from those of face to face Communication. Especially, Several traits of Twitter, that is 140 words limitation, text-oriented communication, open Communication environments are different from those of traditional text oriented CMC(Computer Mediated Communication).
This study focused on politeness strategies related to “face” using in twitter conversation. Face threaten acts and face saving politeness in twitter conversation are analyzed. Through out this Analysis, the traits of face acts in SNS(Social Network Service, the evolutional version of CMC) can be inferred.
Politeness strategies using in Korean twitter can be classified to four type. Those are evident honor strategies, evident humility strategies, normative honor strategies, normative humility strategies. And this study analysed twitter conversation with five analysis unit, as following: self introduction method, using words, turn taking, conversation context, reaction of participants.
The result shows that twitter participants keep conversation etiquette and communication rules which is different from those of FtF communication. In twitter conversation, politeness strategies are related to honor and humility, not so much evidently but normatively. Twitter conversations are private as well as public communication. In conclusion, conversations in social network service like twitter are the CMC which is oriented to social relationship.
