The significance of Chinese study has rapidly been growing as China has become one of the most important countries in the world politics. There have been many approaches of Chinese foreign policy since the establishment of socialist China in 1949. This paper that attempts to classify them and evaluate their each characteristics reaches the following. First, historico-cultural and ideological approaches have been exercised. Second, there have been attempts to uncover micro-foundations of Chinese foreign policy based on decision makers' rational calculations, factionalism, and government policy making processes. Third, macro causes such as national interests and the world system have been investigated. Fourth, the interactions of micro-foundations and macro causes such as domestic interest and political groups and the international system have been emphasized. This paper classifies analyses emphasizing international factors as macro studies and the ones that focus on domestic actors and individuals as micro studies.
