This study investigates social network types of emotional, instrumental, and physical support among the elderly living alone in rural area. Also this study analyzes how often the elderly living alone in rural area contact or meet the major components of social network(such as their children, grandchildren, sibling & relatives, and friends & neighbors) and how much they satisfy their relationships with these major components.
In order to achieve these study goals, this study utilizes “2008 National Data on the Elderly,” and draws the study 1,620 study samples living alone in rural area. The data are analyzed by statistical program SPSS 17.0, and by descriptive statistics(frequencies, percentiles, and averages), and inferential statistics such as Two sample t-test for mean difference and One-way ANOVA.
The study first finds that the study sample hangs on the telephone more frequently with their children than other people. Meanwhile they meet more frequently with their friends and neighbors than other people. Also, this study finds that the elderly living alone in rural area more frequently exchange emotional, instrumental, and physical support with their children than other people. In contrast, they do not inclined to exchange those support with their siblings and other relatives. Importantly, this study also finds that the elderly are most highly satisfied with the relationship with their children. This satisfaction level is related with study the gender, age, income, and subjective health level of study sample. The study findings might be utilized as basic materials for social welfare policy suggestions designed for increasing the quality of living of the elderly alone living in rural area.
