This study elucidates the narrative representation of the “white-collar” class that emerged as a new urban subject in the early 20th century. It focuses on the phenomenon in which Kōtō yūmin (educated idlers) and flâneurs were subsumed by the capitalist system, losing their unique urban distinctiveness to converge into a homogenized workforce following World War I and the Great Depression. By extending the genealogy of the urban subject from the flâneur to the office worker, this research attempts a comparative literary reading that transcends Western and non-Western boundaries. Specifically, the study analyzes Maeda Hajime’s Salaryman Story (1927) and Hans Fallada’s Little Man, What Now? (Kleiner Mann, was nun?, 1932). Set in Tokyo and Berlin respectively, both texts scrutinize the precarious daily lives of the intermediate class. Drawing from their own pre-literary experiences as employees, the authors depicted strikingly similar portraits of the petit bourgeois within the distinct spatiotemporal contexts of late Taisho/early Showa Japan and the late Weimar Republic. Furthermore, this paper examines the methodological convergence of “observation” and “recording” in their representations. Maeda’s approach of collecting and cataloging the daily facets of salarymen mirrors the “Modernology” advocated by Kon Wajiro. Meanwhile, Fallada practices a literary form of Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), prioritizing cold analysis over sentimental subjectivity. Ultimately, this study highlights how both authors portrayed the reality of the modern petit bourgeois by fixating on concrete objects and phenomena rather than abstract ideologies.
