This study examines the ambivalence of emotion and the ethical irony depicted in Lee Woo-hyuk’s The Soul Guardians (Toemalok), analyzing the text through the framework of Jesse Prinz’s theory of emotion. Beneath the religious structure of an exorcism narrative, The Soul Guardians explores the complex interplay of human emotions—fear, disgust, compassion, and faith. While the work appears to follow the genre conventions of supernatural exorcism fiction, it simultaneously reveals persistent emotional contradictions and ethical conflicts experienced by human beings, thereby opening the text to philosophical interpretation. Prinz conceptualizes emotion not as a mere physiological reaction or private feeling but as an embodied appraisal in which moral judgment and cultural evaluation are physically realized. From this perspective, the act of exorcism in The Soul Guardians cannot be understood simply as a process of distinguishing good from evil. Rather, it functions as a narrative space where human beings construct ethical judgments through emotion while simultaneously confronting the limitations of those judgments. The main characters—including Hyeonam—seek to realize justice and salvation through the act of expelling evil spirits. However, they also experience compassion for the suffering and tragic histories of those spirits, which leads them to moments of guilt and moral hesitation. This emotional duality destabilizes the clear binary of good and evil and creates an ironic structure in which emotion becomes both the foundation of moral judgment and the force that exposes its instability. In this sense, The Soul Guardians transcends the conventions of occult fantasy and can be interpreted as a humanistic narrative that interrogates moral emotion and ethical dilemma. Ultimately, the text acknowledges the imperfection and ambivalence of human emotion while opening a space for ethical reflection. By applying Prinz’s theory of emotion, this study highlights how Korean fantasy literature narratively embodies philosophical questions about emotion and demonstrates how genre fiction can illuminate the complex relationship between human emotion and moral judgment.
