This study examines the political economy of desire in Nine Cloud Dream by Kim Man-jung and El burlador de Sevilla by Tirso de Molina through Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework of field, capital, and habitus. Bourdieu’s model enables the analysis of desire as a social mechanism rather than an individual emotion, revealing how seduction and marriage operate not merely as moral or personal acts but as strategies for the accumulation, exchange, and loss of “house capital”—a composite form of economic, social, and symbolic capital that sustains familial hierarchy and social order. In the Confucian socio-political order of late Joseon Korea, Yang So-yu’s serial marriages constitute a legitimate strategy for converting economic assets such as dowries into social alliances and symbolic prestige. In contrast, within the Catholic honor-based society of seventeenth-century Spain, Don Juan’s deceptive seductions destabilize the symbolic capital of noble families, resulting in the erosion of social trust and moral legitimacy. By analyzing key narrative events—seduction, betrothal, dowry negotiation, and the loss of honor—the study reveals how women function as mediators of capital circulation. In Nine Cloud Dream, female characters act as administrators of social integration and continuity, whereas in El burlador de Sevilla, they become sacrificial agents through whom the violated order reasserts divine authority. The paper proposes the concept of “house capital” as a comparative analytical tool for understanding how desire operates as a political-economic force embedded in familial and institutional structures. The findings contribute to comparative literary theory by shifting the focus from moral discourse to socio-economic systems, offering a new paradigm for examining the intersection of sexual politics, symbolic capital, and the reproduction of power in premodern world literatures.
