This study analyzes seven Korean translations of William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, focusing on the challenges of localizing the highly formalized English sonnet into Korean poetry. Shakespeare’s sonnets are characterized by a strict iambic pentameter and a rhyme scheme of “abab cdcd efef gg,” which complicates direct translation into Korean, a language with fundamentally different meter and syllabic rhythms. This study highlights three key aspects of translation: poetic form, metaphorical language, and the translator’s responsibility. First, while all seven translations maintain a fourteen-line structure, they each borrow from the rhythm of the Korean sijo, create new internal rhymes, or attempt to replicate the original rhyme scheme. Second, the core metaphors of Sonnet 18—”summer’s day,” “summer’s lease,” and “thy eternal summer”—display subtle differences, reflecting cultural differences in the perception of summer between England and Korea. These choices influence how readers perceive the contrast between the mortal beauty of nature and the permanence of poetic immortality. Third, drawing on the theories of Walter Benjamin and Susanne Bassnett, this study explores whether poets alone can be translators, translating beyond mere meaning to capture the “poetic essence.” The findings suggest that while professional translators and literary scholars can provide accessible translations, poets’ translations do not necessarily achieve exceptional fidelity to form or imagery. Ultimately, Sonnet 18 demonstrates the difficulty—and necessity—of balancing meaning, rhythm, and metaphor in cross-cultural translation.
