This paper examines the philosophical implications of animality in Edward Albee’s stage plays: Seascape and The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?. Renowned for his experimental theatricality, Albee has challenged social norms and explored existential contradictions in the human condition, as well as interrogating the breakdown of communication between people in American society. Despite being written nearly thirty years apart, the two plays share the theme of permeable boundaries between humans and animals, raising ontological questions about both species. Rather than functioning as metaphorical devices, animals in these works serve as mediators, revealing the psychological complexities of human characters and highlighting broader contradictions. In Seascape, the encounter between humans and lizard creatures breaks down boundaries, creating a transformative realm of perception. In The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?, however, a human’s love for a goat symbolizes social taboos and a radical challenge to anthropocentric values, ultimately leading to the disintegration of a family. Drawing on critical frameworks of René Descartes (animal-machine theory) and Jacques Derrida (animal alterity theory), the study argues that Albee’s vision transcends social criticism, questioning and rethinking the traditional human-nonhuman divide in contemporary society.
