초록· 키워드

This study systematically analyzed sports officiating systems, implemented to uphold the core value of fairness in modern sports, by applying the SAE(Society of Automotive Engineers) Levels 0–5 automation framework. Football’s VAR(Level 2) focuses on correcting "clear and obvious errors" while respecting the referee's subjectivity under the principle of "minimum interference." Meanwhile, baseball’s ABS(Level 3)—the first of its kind in professional leagues—maximizes the consistency and objectivity of decisions through mathematical precision. Taekwondo’s PSS and IVR(Level 3/2) represent early sensor-based attempts at objectivity; however, they face ongoing challenges regarding technical reliability and the potential alteration of the sport’s essential nature. The research findings indicate that while higher levels of automation drastically improve the accuracy of officiating, they also produce new risks, such as disruptions in game flow, communication failures between humans and systems, and ethical dilemmas arising from technical glitches. To address these issues, this study proposes several policy response measures. First, clarifying legal liability for technical errors. Second, reinforcing the overall reliability of sports officiating systems. Third, establishing international sports technology standards. Forth, enhancing the digital literacy of human officials. In conclusion, the ultimate goal of sports automation is not the replacement of humans, but rather the realization of a fair and just arena through the harmonious coexistence of technology and human judgment.
